The Act of Killing
(Joshua Oppenheimer, 2012)
A landmark documentary, Oppenheimer’s ingenious meditation on the 1965-66 Indonesian genocide probed both the moral consciences of its perpetrators and the ethics of nonfiction film-making. Directly drafting former executioners of the New Order into re-enactments of their crimes, it is confrontational and cathartic, but hardly cleansing; its understanding of mass-murderer psychology far exceeds the reach or grasp of any Netflix true-crime special.
